Finding Your Perfect Manicure

A Guide to Choosing the Right Nail Service

Walking into a nail salon can feel a bit like staring at a massive menu in a language you don’t quite speak. With so many options—Lacquer, Gel, Acrylic, Builder Gel and Gel-X—how do you know which one actually fits your lifestyle and aesthetic?

Choosing the right service is the foundation of a great nail experience. To help you decide, we’ve broken it down into three simple questions. Let's find your perfect match!

1. Do You Want Extra Length?

The first thing to decide is whether you want to keep your natural length (Overlay) or add length (Extensions).

  • I want Extensions: If you’re looking for that "long nail" drama, you’ll need a service that can support an extension. Your best bets are Acrylics, Gel-X, or Builder Gel. These provide the structural integrity needed to add tips to your natural nails.

  • I want an Overlay: If you love your natural length and just want to strengthen or beautify what you have, you can choose Lacquer, Gel (Shellac), Builder Gel or SNS (Dipping Powder).

    • Pro Tip: If you want your natural nails to grow longer and stronger over time, an Acrylic overlay provides a hard "shield" that prevents snapping.

2. How Long Do You Need it to Last?

Life is busy, and not everyone has time for weekly salon visits. Consider your "wear time" expectations:

Short-term: Lacquer (Polish): 2–5 Days, Special events or those who like changing colors often.

Mid-term: Gel (Shellac): 10–14 Days: Natural nails; depends on nail strength (stronger nails = longer wear).

Long-term: SNS, Gel-X, or Acrylic: 3+ Weeks, Maximum durability for busy hands and active lifestyles.

Note: The health of your natural nail plays a big role. If your nails are very thin or oily, standard Gel might lift sooner, whereas SNS or Acrylic will provide a more "permanent" bond.

3. Are You Dreaming of Nail Art?

Not all nail "foundations" are created equal when it comes to creativity.

  • Simple & Classic: If you prefer a solid color or a very basic design on one or two fingers, Gel (Shellac) or SNS work just fine. However, SNS can sometimes be too thick for intricate hand-painted details.

  • Intricate & Detailed: If you want 3D art, complex patterns, or "Pinterest-worthy" designs, Gel or Acrylic are your best friends. These mediums stay wet until cured (Gel) or are easily shaped (Acrylic), giving the technician the precision needed for high-detail work.

Summary: The Quick Cheat Sheet

  • Choose Lacquer if: You want a quick color for a weekend and want to remove it easily at home.

  • Choose Gel (Shellac) if: You want a shiny, no-dry-time finish on your natural nails that lasts about two weeks.

  • Choose SNS (Dip) if: You want a strong, long-lasting overlay without using a UV light.

  • Choose Acrylic, Builder Gel or Gel-X if: You want long extensions and complex, beautiful nail art that lasts until your next refill.

Still not sure? Don't be afraid to ask your technician! We love helping you choose a service that makes your hands look and feel amazing.
